It has been developed as part of the process of updating standards and replacing the Safer Shopping Award, which Birmingham Retail Crime Operation won in 2000.

The Crime Reduction Partnership encompasses business, leisure and retail, all working together to reduce crime. The most recent addition to the “Family” is the Broad Street Business Improvement District.

This nationally recognised award clearly indicates that Birmingham has achieved a high standard in its crime reduction policies and assures that the scheme is being managed in a correct and proper way allowing the lawful exchange of information.

Birmingham Retail Crime Operation operates a state of the art Security Trunked radio system in the city centre linking police to retail, business, leisure, Jewellery Quarter and Car Parks for the purpose of crime prevention. This in turn links to the Citywatch Police Camera system helping to make Birmingham City Centre a Safer Place.

An effective Exclusion Scheme operates and its intelligence is managed through the ACIS Database, which has been developed by the Retail Crime Operation. This software is now being used by similar Crime Reduction Schemes all over the country.

High quality Daily Intelligence bulletins are sent out each day in order to keep members informed and the crime reduction in retail alone is quite staggering. Shop Thefts have reduced from 2442 in 1999 to 1719 in 2004 (nearly 42% reduction) with figures for 2005 showing lower than ever before.

The winning of the Safer Business Award is a proud achievement for Birmingham City Centre and sets Birmingham well ahead of many other similar schemes in the United Kingdom.
