Birmingham City Centre – Radio Link Up
New state of the art equipment has now been installed to upgrade the “AB Security Radio Link” for the centre of Birmingham and outlying districts.
For the first time ever, Retailers, Leisure (particularly Broad Street clubs etc), Business Community, Jewellery Quarter, National Car Parks, Street Wardens, Police Camera, Police Crime Fighting Teams and British Waterway Patrols will all be working on the same radio network for the purpose of crime prevention and will have the ability to communicate with each other at the press of a button.
The new "AB Trunked" radio system has the ability to allow users to make "Group" calls or "One to One Calls" to users in their group. "Caller Identification" is also built into the system and each radio can be switched on or off remotely from our base stations. Microwave technology has linked these base stations ensuring good radio coverage.
One of the base stations is situated in the Police Control Room at Steelhouse Lane Police Station allowing the Police Citywatch Camera operator to communicate directly with security operatives throughout the network. This gives the police an opportunity of making an early assessment of situations and responding accordingly, making the high quality CCTV system even more effective.
Most of the users rent their radios at a very reasonable cost, although there is an option to purchase the equipment. Everyone using the radio link must be members of the Birmingham R.C.O. and will have signed up to the Data Protection Protocols in order to comply with law.
Retailers save many thousand of pounds each year using the radio to warn each other of approaching shop thieves.
Terrorism, robbery, theft, disorder, missing persons etc are all part of today’s society and need to be dealt with. The radio link is an effective tool in assisting to combat incidents of this nature.
Personal safety is of great concern these days and the system allows users to have a “Peace of mind” in the knowledge that they are not working in isolation but are part of a team ensuring Birmingham is a safer place.
Persons wishing to find out more how to become part of the network should contact Mick Barnes or Alan Shakespeare, on 0121-236-7652 or email m.barnes@shopcrime.org
