A Drugs Arrest Referral Scheme has recently been established within West Midlands Police consisting of 13 referral workers. The service engages with persons arrested for criminal offences that are related to drug use. They also target individuals who have been identified as prolific offenders and have been arrested within the last six months.

The primary objectives of the scheme are :

• To assist in crime reduction and break the cycle of re-offending
   

• To identify individuals who may benefit from referral and drug treatment programmes
   

• To reduce the propensity to commit crime by such individuals

The referral service will be available to all persons who pass through custody and leaflets are available outlining the scheme from the custody sergeant.

The Drugs Arrest Referral Officer for FI OCU Steelhouse Lane is Gurjit Brring. She will be working from the Community Safety Bureau and can be contacted on 07899061764 between 8.30am and 4.30pm.

What the individual discusses with the drugs worker about personal issues and drug use will be treated with the strictest confidence. Gurjit is not a police officer. She cannot discuss the clients’ present offence or affect any charge or court appearance.
